today one of my kids who is usually not my favorite/doesn't exactly love me got his finger smashed in a door and was crying. he's the last one i would expect to actually cry. a mom walked in, saw it happen, and tried to look at his finger, but he wouldn't let her. he was just balled up in a corner. but i went over, patted (is it pat or patted? dictionary.com says patted) his back and he let me look at it. small victories.
