monster mash

this is a nice slideshow of the events that went on in washington for halloween tonight. the house was lit up with orange lights, there was a giant spider and spiderweb in front of the north portico, and bazillions of painted actors in costume to take pictures and shoo kids along. afterward, there were parties for military and staff families.

this evening i went to a party with friends from high school and new friends from DC. you wouldn't believe the number of guys in spandex or leggings. at least half of the guys there were in either makeup, spandex or otherwise nontraditional halloween wear. pretty amusing.

i am so exhausted i can barely keep my eyes open. time for bed. happy halloween!

it's all or nothing

in honor of it being friday and perfect napping weather, i'm just going to post a picture of my costume and say farewell until tomorrow.
i wish i had taken a picture of super mario, a hippie, a couple of switcheroos, and some inside jokes.

i should tell you

man. i was going to be too early to work, so i stopped at this little coffee stand on the corner and ordered an iced raspberry mocha. it had two shots of espresso and a lot of raspberry syrup in it. the thing is that i neeeever drink coffee. usually i get a big can of arizona raspberry iced tea. yuuum.
but the coffee made me minchy and i felt like my heart was going to beat itself right out of my chest. so no more coffee for this girl.
today we took a little field trip to the farmer's market across from the white house. we got a little tour which was pretty cool. i bought a loaf of sourdough, a honeycrisp apple and some dill cheese.
they're usually around on thursdays, but this is the last one until spring, if they have it again. i guess they need to get all kinds of city permits and have it approved. here's a fun fact: this is the first time there's been a white house sponsored farmer's market in that location since JEFFERSON.
lafayette park is all decked out for halloween. i resisted the urge to jump in the piles of raked leaves. there was a cop car parked on the side walk.

that's kind of an interesting thing about downtown DC. you'll show up one morning and all of the flowers on a whole street have changed. two weeks ago they changed from ..not daisies but something like them, all yellow.. to pansies. and i saw them planting bulbs underneath so hopefully in spring there will be pretty tulips or daffodills or something. hopefully i'm around to see them!

i am SO excited to wear my costume tomorrow and see what everyone else came up with. what mine lacks in imagination is made up for with handmade goodness.

don't let your heart get weary

these are the last of the pictures and then we'll get back to real posts tomorrow or so. you haven't missed anything. i think some of the people at work will be my friends for a long time. funny how you can meet people, know them for a few months and then they're folded into your life from then on.
we spent probably 6 or 8 hours on my dress. gram and aunt carol had cut it out before i got there and pinned the pattern, so all we [and by 'we' i mean 'gram'] had to do was sew it together.

i think i've got single girl fever. i feel the urgent need to write little post its with brightly colored marker and cuddle and watch movies and kiss. i guess all i can do is hope someone falls into my lap. though it occurred to me today that i can be thoughtful for people who i'm not dating. it just isn't as fun.

today is the food episode of the new hampshire visit. i'll be honest and tell you i'm the teeniest bit tipsy from a dinner party i just attended down the block, so this will be the quick version so i can dry my hair and get to bed. the dinner party was fun though. they made stuffed chicken and tarragon butter turnover things. we brought baked brie and strawberry shortcake. both were a hit.

fall falling

i have 90something pictures from new hampshire but it's late so i'll post some of outside stuff tonight and the pretty fall foliage and then i'll post more of people and food and things in the next couple of days while i catch up.

i believe norma gave my grandparents this frog because froggy was my nickname when i was little. it's cement and weighs a million pounds.
the back yard. they live on an acre and it's a big wide open flat hill with flowers along the edge and then it slopes down in back. very pretty in summer.

the horse knows the way

gram sewed the button back on my pants. i sewed it on yesterday, but it was faulty workmanship and only held for a few hours. i don't know if it was bad sewing or expanding waistline. let's hope it's the former.

i don't know if i can fit one more thing in my stomach before i explode. here's the list from today..

we also went to the outlet mall in kittery where my coworkers will be happy to know, i found a pair of navy wool pants. i always get a lot of crap for never wearing pants, but all i own are skirts. so they'll be happy.

it was a nice day. the leaves are beauuutiful on the trees. we finished my dress. i'll model it tomorrow and take a picture.this is newicks, our fav seafood place, and the view from the dining roomi'm going to enjoy our half day tomorrow before i head back to washington dc!

p.s. trust me, no one wants me to be able to tell you what goes on at work more than i do, but i just can't. if you ever feel like you need a taste of the governmental side of DC though, they have lots of cool pictures on the official flickr site and lots of videos on the website. watch the astronomy video where they had the kids over. that was a beautiful night. you can guess which side of the fence i was on.

over the river and through the woods

well in all the excitement of packing and everything, i didn't get a chance to update to tell you i was going to new hampshire to visit the grandparents. i got in yesterday morning to freezing cold weather, we went to a restaurant i've never been to in durham and then we hung out for a bit. aunt carol and i ran some errands while spanky went to physical therapy for his sciatica.

i love being at my grandparents house. it always smells the same, the fridge is full of things i like, there's tea-aplenty. we go shopping and to our favorite restaurants. i took the fancycam with me, so i'll upload pictures when i get home. for now, i'm on my old toshiba that i gave gram and spanky when i went to taiwan so we could keep in touch.
(these are the frozen raspberries that gram and spanky picked just for me this summer to eat with vanilla ice cream!)

today we went shopping and i found a cute skirt and a couple of tops. gram and i have been sewing away on my halloween costume. all we have left is the hem. it's pretty cute, i can't wait to upload the pictures. i even kind of sewed in a straight line on the machine. i can't figure out how to get the pedal to push down evenly though so i either drive way too fast or i crawl along. who knows. gram is the expert here.

anyway we watched the UT game tonight until they switched it to "the more interesting" USC game. chicken on the rotisserie, fresh brusselsprouts, salad and sweet potatoes tonight with ice cream sandwiches from roberges and apple pie for dessert. deeeelicious. i think i've gained 5 pounds.

higher and higher

it's kind of an interesting thing how when you feel like you look put together, everything else falls into place. maybe i'm shallow. yesterday i wore a royal purple cardigan, a light purple tank top under it, a light gray pencil skirt and darker gray open weave tights with black heels. it was fine, but i felt a little off all day because nothing really went together just right.

but todayy i wore my new black dress, which fits perfectly, my favorite colored cardigan (light aqua), a long string of pearls and black heels with bare legs and i felt fantastic and very audrey. a lot of the day it was too hot in the office for a sweater so i was just in the dress and pearls and it was perfect.

met up with abha and her boyfriend pedro who are in town apartment hunting for their impending move from NYC, and john, becca and her fiance. we had tapas in cleveland park and it was deeelicious. pork empanadas, fig and spinach salad, yucca, chili rellenos, ... a million other tasty things. sangria! it's so nice to chat with familiar faces. the bad part about always meeting new people is giving the same getting to know you speech a million times.
'i graduated two years ago, worked in publishing for a year, taught english in taiwan for a year and got back a month and a half ago.'
'oh cool. how was that? did you learn to speak chinese?'
'it changed my life. i can speak conversational mandarin.'
and then the topic changes.

miriam and i have had many discussions about how frustrating it can be to try to explain what it's like to live in asia to people who have no concept. i'm so glad she lives here. everything happens for a reason.

fallen, fallen, fallennn

our internet is a wee bit sketchy as we may or may not be stealing it from somewhere around our apartment, so i couldn't post last night.

sunday i handed out fliers at an event outside. it was freeezing cold and rainy, so to make it interesting for myself, i just intercepted every chinese tourist i could find. i'd ask where they were from in english and then say i was an english teacher in taiwan (in mandarin) and they were all pretty surprised. it was the familiar chain of me speaking to one person and then everyone around them looking at each other and saying ohmygod that blonde girl just spoke chinese! she understood what we said! which is always fun for me. one man told me i had very good pronunciation!
i got to see the rose garden. it's smaller than it looks on tv. but very rosy.

sunday was my friend john's birthday so we went to lauriol plaza (which apparently is pronounced loreal.. i argued with 2 people and gave up) for dinner. they have mexican food! miriam and i split an enchilada plate and a half pitcher of frozen strawberry/lime swirl margarita. john's friends are really fun and they live a block from our apartment, so we've seen them a few times this weekend.

today the sun finally came out and it was in the 60s, which felt surprisingly just as cold as the 40s of last week.
[breakfast. that piece was missing when i got to it in the morning. the piece i ate was considerably larger and left me feeling sugary and gross all morning. but yay for roommates who make cake.]

i'm drinking ice water. the clinking of ice cubes in a glass reminds me of when i was little and my mom or dad would bring us a cup of ice water before bed when we had lay downs. we would read a story or just talk about our day. but you always knew they were coming because you could hear clinking from way down the hall.

one night to be confused

so we're having a costume/halloween recipe contest at work.
the obvious choice was the tinkerbelle dress. i sent it by boat from taiwan when i left, which was august 22nd i think? 26th? something. anyway i was worried it wouldn't get to the US in time, but apparently it arrived yesterday and could easily be fed exed to washington in time.

but it's not exaaactly work appropriate. i think gram and i could add a giant panel of green organza to the top, but it probably wouldn't match right and it would still be a little too 'AHH LOOK AT ME I'M IN TUTU AND SPARKLESSS' for the office in the daytime.

so plan B is alice in wonderland. i wanted something you need to be blonde for since there are only 3 blondes in the office.
since i'm visiting gram and spanky the 23rd-26th, we can just whip it up while i'm there. it's just a blue dress with puffy sleeves and a white apron.

the best part of all is the recipe options. tarts. some kind of 'getting bigger' cookie and 'getting smaller' drink. or tea sandwiches. flower something or other. white rose shaped cookies with random splashed on red icing.

so that's what's happening around here. tomorrow is our last day of cold and rain! i am so ready for monday.

oh, crushes. i won't tell you who or where or how or anything. but i'm the kind of crusher that i always want to be around them all the time and know everything and overdose. i didn't know that that wasn't how everyone did it because ALLLL of my relationships have been like that. i guess i've just gotten lucky that everyone i've dated hasn't freaked that i get mildly obsessed and creepy about it, and they're usually equally excited.
although, can we all agree that talking all the time and never wanting to be apart is the ideal way to begin a relationship?

anyway there are many reasons why i can't do that with this one, so i've tried doing what i think most people do which is stay cool and not fawn. but it's almost impossible for me to do that. this trying to purposely not talk to him business is just making me want to talk more. so. who knows.

good day today. i need rain boots. my comfy shoes aren't waterproof at all.

gram is 81! happy birthday gram.

two important milestones today.
1. the temperature has reached the 50s with lows in the 40s. it is freezing. fall has fallen. that was tacky but that's what the sign in the elevator has said all week and i guess it's stuck in my head.
anyway when i got out of work it was dark, rainy and cold but crisp and wintery feeling, which is kind of nice. with a good scarf, the cold barely gets in.

2. my neck has officially reached the mom stage. it feels all papery and soft. it's funny how different things remind you of the fam. when i make awkward jokes to strangers, i think of faj. when i give money to homeless people, i think of jeff. when i wear the clap clap shirt, i think of matt. almost everything makes me think of the maj. (like 11:11, which is the time right nooow).

every time you close your eyes

here's a dilemma. i've mastered about 10 things without a recipe.. white chili, chicken divan, becca's mom's chicken and rice, spinach lasagna, shepherd's pie (which i made tonight), chicken noodle soup, chicken and dumplings, chicken picatta and pork tenderloin. they're all fine, but they're all really easy/casserole things.

now i want to learn how to make more complicated dishes and difficult techniques. i was goinggg to start with bread, but we simply don't have room in our fridge for a giant tub of bread dough. i haven't eaten a whole lot of meat for the last year so maybe i'll focus on veggie things. and rissoto! i've wanted to learn that for a long time.

i'll leave you with my recipe (it's not really a recipe at all) for
cheater's shepherds pie
1 lb ground beef
1 package frozen mixed veggies
1 small box of mashed potato powder stuff
1 package of gravy mix
milk

defrost veggies. brown beef. make gravy.. be careful it doesn't explode in microwave (whoops! lesson learned). mix veggies, beef, gravy and spread in the bottom of a glass dish. make potatoes and spread evenly over top. bake at your favorite temp in the 300s for as long as you want. i guess since it's all already cooked/hot, there's no need for the oven at all unless you want to melt some cheese on top.

i supppoooose it could be made the hard way, but i got home at 8pm and it cost $6 and took 20 minutes to make. i did use fresh corn and it's the only veggie that stands out.

p.s. design crisis was really good today. they had a guest writer who i find really hilarious and her house is just my style. if you have 2 extra minutes, just scroll through. how pretty are those slate colored walls?

girly day! miriam and i went shoe shopping in georgetown, had crepes and bubble tea for lunch and wandered. then we went grocery shopping and made manicotti and chocolate pudding. it was lovely and girly and fun. cold out though. but fun.

i'm so sleepy. i think i'm going to order some of these. when you buy a pair of shoes, they donate a pair to a kid who needs shoes. and they have arch support. double win. how cute is that tweed?

in a station at the metro

i feel like i've been going going going today. i guess i have. this morning i met richard, a guy from the program, for brunch. we went to a cool little farmer's market in dupont before stopping for brunch at a place i've passed a million times on the bus and always wanted to go to. the server didn't know what a western omelet was. surely that can't be a southern thing.

this afternoon i met with a girl from work and we had planned to go to a museum but there's a big solar decathlon housing thing going on on the national mall right now, so we toured some houses instead. they all had radiant heat from the floor and ceiling, teeny tiny little living spaces and lots of solar panels. they're designed/built by university students and then judged on multiple points for most energy efficient, most energy leftover, how well their systems work, etc.

this evening JPK and i met up for dinner at ..i keep forgetting the name. marvin. i had a giant bowl of mussels with shallot, garlic, white wine and butter sauce. they were soo delicious. i dipped about half a baguette in the sauce afterwards. i love hanging out with john. there's something to be said for friendships that go way back and you just pick up where you left off, no matter how long it's been. though i see john relatively often.

busy day. i bought a bottle of wine for the first time in several months. i'm trying not to spend unnecessary money on things like wine and dessert, but sometimes it's worth it. i was craving apples and white wine all day today. i still haven't had the apple. breakfast. and jalapeno cheese toast. love the farmers market.

tell everyone you know

when i was a senior in college, i lived with these two boys, tom and bryan. i didn't really know them well, but we had a fun year. they like to ninja fight, balance on yoga balls, throw parties.
i forget why, but tom and i decided we should get pretend engaged. i believe it had something to do with going to the bridal extravaganza downtown and tasting cake.so he bought me a $30 ring on qvc.com [the note said 'will you marry me?'], we changed our facebook statuses to 'engaged', and that's how theyve stayed until today. that was three years ago. so now when i friend someone on facebook who doesn't know me well or who i haven't talked to in a long time, they always congratulate me and i say thanks. it's kind of a funny random thing.

anyway this is all leading up to another story. tom is in the DC area for a day and this morning we met up and went to dim sum [at david chu's uncle's restaurant, actually. david comments on my blog occasionally], which was delicious, and then we went to coffee and then we went to get manicures. yes, manicures. it was tom's idea. he's been sailing for the last 2 weeks and apparently LA has gotten to him, because he felt like his hands were in need of professional help.
so we're getting our nails filed and tom is talking about how he's flying back to LA today.

tom: i'm visiting my lovely fiance, megan
woman 2: isn't that nice how he said fiance. guys never want to say that word
me (blushing like crazy): it is nice, isn't it
tom: she's blushing!

it was funny but i know i must have been bright red. anyway now i have lovely nails.

then this evening i went to dinner with my bestie, her mom, sister and one of our friends in DC. they're in town to try on bridal dresses, wooo! we went to this reaallly yummy place that's half restaurant, half book store. i had pumpkin raviolli. it was like not-so-sweet pumpkin pie filling inside raviolli with brown butter and pine nuts and sage, yummm.

then i came home to watch texas beat colorado. jordan shipley, faj and my fav player, scored on a couple of 80 & 90 yard punt returns. he is amazing.

so, fun day!

tonight on the phone mrs. chan said 'just get on a plane and come visit us'.

all the cards left to play

do you often make up arbitrary rules for yourself? last night on the way to the laundry room downstairs there was a flier in the hall and i told myself if it was still there when i walked back, i'd pick it up. it was there.. and i alllmost walked past it, but i picked it up.

sometimes when i'm having a hard time getting out of the shower i count to ten and then shut the water off immediately. and i'm a chronic ovethinker so lots of times i think of the exact words i want to use to say something uncomfortable to someone but i don't know when to bring it up.. so i count to three and then just spit it out.

i think it's really interesting to find out what makes people do certain things. i think we can almost always accept all outcomes when we know someone's rationalle behind something.

random news: a 6-inch cold cut combo in DC is $3.69, just like at home.
there's apparently a creperie right down by where i work.
i might get to see my pretend fiance tomorrow morning!
miriam is making caaaake.
i wore my dress backwards today because the real front was too low cut for work but it was passable when turned around. i kept it a secret alll day when finally i spilled the beans to jamil, who thought i was ridiculous for doing it/telling him.

take only what you need

it's official. i'm in a lull. will keeps insisting that i'm depressed, but that isn't it. i just can't tell you about any of the interesting stuff and i haven't been doing anything else. this weekend though, we have a 3 day weekend, so i'm determined to get out and about. i want to take pictures, go to museums, find some yoga, and do things in DC. i've only got 2 and a half months left.

tomorrow night lesley is making me dinner. she's been home sick but now i think she's up and about. that will be fun. a good start to an eventful weekend.

random story..
when i was packing my stuff in taiwan i couldn't stop thinking about how if you put a stack of paper in a suit case, eventually it wouldn't close if you tried to add one more paper. even though it's sooo thin. but there has to be a cutoff at some point.

so yesterday i wanted to wear my new dress with a button down shirt underneath. the dress fit fine without it, i didn't think it would matter. but when i went to put the dress on over my shirt, all of the sudden the dress was too tight for me to breathe comfortably. just one little button down shirt made that big of a difference.

i told a girl at work that story yesterday and she looked at me like i had lost it. but i thought it was interesting.

miike with two i's

when you get out of the metro at farragut north there's a man in a bright green vest selling papers. he yells out the news like an old fashioned paper boy. he's selling a newspaper called street sense. it's written for and by homeless people and published by a small staff. i remember watching the video while i was in taiwan, obsessed with all multimedia projects. i think i'm going to start buying it a couple of times a week.

there's a homeless man who plays the trumpet on the corner of 18th and pennsylvania. he plays at full volume at 8 in the morning, one-handed with his cheeks puffed out and his head tilted back. he's usually bundled up in coats and layers with a hat on. although today i was surprised to see him in a full suit. it seemed like more people than usual were stopping to chat with him. he stops playing if you give him money so he can shake your hand and chat with you.

i usually go to work with my ipod playing but my signal to turn it off and put it away is when i can hear him playing when i get halfway down 18th street. he's one of my favorite parts of the morning. just beyond him, on the other side of the park, is a homeless man who says good morning ladies or good morning sir to everyone who walks by. he's a friendly face to see every morning.

grandma joan was telling me about this weird problem some people have where they can't leave a flat surface alone without putting something on it. i think she was joking? but grandpa mannix, uncle john, aunt pam, my mom and i all have it.. real or not. i literally can't help but pile little stuff everywhere.
this was from library of congress day. we walked down to the capitol buildingthe architecture in DC is so fancy. this isn't DC, this is koh tao, where emil, tess and steph are. i could use some time in thailand! who came up with this silly idea of only being able to take 2 weeks of vacation in a year. luckily, i'm not locked into that schedule yet.
