no, no, there's no way

we made my favorite quiche today in cooking club--bacon, potato and onion (green and white). it was delicious. none of the kids had ever had quiche before. tomorrow we're making spanikopita. that should be an adventure. you think two hours is enough for cooking club, but it's really cutting it close.

when you work at a summer camp, there's lots of talk about having fun vs challenging the kids. some people fall into the 'this is summer. it shouldn't be like school' camp, some into the 'the whole point is that they grow as leaders' camp. since i'm a teacher with a non-traditional teaching style.. i fall into both. there's no reason to make it too schooly and restrictive.. but kids of all ages want to be challenged. and if you expect more, they do more.

we've been coming up with lots of small competitions to keep things interesting during downtime:
the count how many school colors are used in unnecessary places contest on the college tour. the tiptoe contest. the count the crosses at mary hardin baylor contest. the hold your breath the longest in the pool contest. the no complaining all day contest. food scategories during cooking club.

and that is the news. the fam got home today which means ripley is free. maj said she was thrilled.

  1. I think keeping kids busy during the summer makes them perform better during the school year too. If they're just in "sleep" mode for 3 months, imagine what a shock to the system it must be if they suddenly have to wake up and use their brain and critical thinking skills! I mean maybe long division every day isn't necessary but some basic problem solving, teamwork, etc can't hurt.

  2. spanikopita=love! If yours is anything like ours turned out, you'll be in love too.

P.S. Yes! I think you should come for a weekend.

  3. exactly, marisa! the first session kids are always a little more alert than second session because their brains haven't had a chance to turn into summer mush yet.

and the spanikopita turned out fab. they were completely amazed by phyllo dough.
